On and Off screen Representation Based On My Critical Investigation

My Critical Investigation revolves around the representation of black actors within contemporary films in contrast to the representation of black actors/actresses within 70s films. The representations of black people off screen has become a controversy in many cases for example they are subject to a lot of negative portrays with the media as they have been seen to be 'thugs', 'criminals' and so on. This has had a major toll with the way actors have been portrayed on screen for example many films have been inspired by the actions of what occurs within society an example of this is "Kidulthood" (which was a 2006 Drama film reflecting the lives of troubled teenagers growing up in West London), because the media has currently been portraying black teenagers as dangerous thugs this was interpreted and changed to fit around the film (directed by Noel Clarke), to also create a negative representations based on typical stereotypes of teenagers thus connoting the afflictions black actors face on and off screen.
Other on and off screen representation of black people is the use of using real life events occurring in society and place them in films creating positive representations of black actors. An example of this is Barack Obama becoming president, and using this within films like 2012 actor Danny Glover playing an American president trying to save the world. This reflects the current issues of American president Barack Obama which as an overall has a positive representations of black people on screen and off.

In conclusion many representations off screen can create either moral panics or have a positive representation of a certain group of people and in this case I have chosen to look at black people, which can both create a heroic sense or a negative stereotype.
